Insurance - Did you know?
So our annual insurance policy expires on the 15th April and yesterday, I scoured websites for deals etc after receiving the renewal email for our broker .
I then called our current broker and after a chat, decided to have continuous cover with the company we are currently with. But, am I a numpty because I didn't realise that: 1. Even if you have annual insurance, if the trip is after it expires, you are not covered. This is regardless of continuous cover, so I had to renew and start it today as opposed to on the 15th April. 2. If you need to cancel your holiday due to illness or death of someone not named on your policy, and they then find out it was a pre-existing condition, you are not covered. Doesn't matter if the person didn't tell you about their illness! My family are quite private about illnesses etc so I'm stuffed basically! Am I alone in being unaware of those 2 things or am I a numpty?! Joa

Yes I knew 2, don't really understand what you saying about 1, but yes if the trip is after the policy expires I would not expect it to be covered but don't understand the continuous cover bit.

Same here, a bit confused about no.1. My daughters annual insurance expires 3 days before we come home next month and I'm undecided about what i should do as she doesn't need another 12 month policy.

I think what Joa is saying is that if your policy expires on the 1st April but you have a trip booked for June , if you had to cancel now ,you wouldn't be covered because even though the policy doesn't expire till April your trip isn't till June ( after the policy expires ) so you wouldn't be covered .
So in other words annual policy's only cover holidays that are booked for within the policy period . It was something I wasn't sure about as I thought cover meant you were covered up to the date the policy ended , but if you have a holiday booked after the policy date ends they won't cover you for that holiday should you need to cancel .

No 2 yes. No 1 is also confusing me. I have a continous cover via my bank. As far as I am concerned it doesn't have an annual end date.

As far as my insurance is concerned, if I book my holiday & inform them that I have booked, whilst my annual insurance is 'live' my holiday booking is covered by my insurance company regardless if I let that insurance expire or renew with a different insurer. I will check again to make sure but thats what they said when I last checked.

I am in that situation now, my policy expires the end of this month but I have a holiday booked in May, I thought I was covered for that may holiday but maybe I am not .

That's not right if you had to cancel it now you would be covered as long is there was no reason for you to be believe you would have to cancel when you took the insurance. Otherwise this would mean you would always need to book and travel within the policy year or have single trip insurance.
