Yes you're right - it's the old BTTF set up. It does use 3d animation though, just not shown in 3D.

This ride would be 100x better if it was upgraded to 3D projection. I don't see why they haven't toyed around with this yet; sure it would need a projector upgrade -- but the rest of the ride is there.

I actually quite like that the Simpsons ride isn't 3D - it's easy to forget about folks whose eyesight doesn't permit them to see in 3D, as much as I think 3D rides are great, I'm glad that not all rides rely on it. The Simpsons as a franchise really doesn't need it, especially with three-dimensional rendering on the artwork as opposed to the two-dimensional TV show. That took a little getting used to, but I think it makes the ride a lot more tolerable. Clearly from the comments in here it didn't work for everyone!
