Remember there's more than just rides - there are shows, parades, etc too

Its my first time as well and I've only got three quarters of a day each for AK and HS as well. Then depending on what happens with star wars fireworks/rivers of light I will try to schedule an evening if necessary.
Edited at 10:24 PM. Reason: Added photos but they were pointless |

The fastpass system at Disney has always been free. You've never had to pay for this. Perhaps you are thinking of Universal's express pass system?
As already mentioned you can prebook your Disney fastpasses 60 days beforehand if staying at a Disney hotel or 30 days beforehand if staying elsewhere. You can prebook 3 fastpasses per day; once you have used those first 3 fastpasses you can book additional fastpasses, one at a time, for that day (subject to availability). Each fastpass is a 1 hour slot and you choose the timeslot you want (again, subject to availability). Yes, that does mean planning to be at a particular park at a particular time a month in advance. Of course, you don't have to prebook your fastpasses. It's optional. You can just wait until you turn up at one of Disney parks and select fastpasses on the day. You may find that all the fastpass slots have gone for the popular rides though. However, many of the attractions will still have fastpasses available, although it somewhat depends on how busy the park is. And Disney only issue so many fastpasses per hour and thus control the number of people in the shorter fastpass queue. Hence why fastpasses can run out on some rides if you leave it until you arrive on the day. For more info, see the following DIBB guidebook page on Disney's Fastpass+ system: https://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/Dis...s--p-1042.html
