Argus car hire - thoughts?

Hi everyone

Just looking for some advice, we normally use Alamo Brits for car hire and find them the best for a people carrier (there are 6 of us)

Unfortunately their rates are really high this year £708 for 19 days so I'm having to do a bit more research, I've found what I think is a reasonable price with Argus car hire for our dates, but I'm always a bit wary after having a bad experience with add on insurances etc. in the past with another company.

Anyone used them before, would you recommend?

Thanks in advance

Not used them myself so can't comment from personal experience, but bear in mind they don't seem t include zero excess in their base quote and you have to pay extra to reduce the excess to zero.

In terms of insurance it looks good - liability, CDW and theft protection is included.

Try a 'dummy'/test booking and see what the prices come out as at the end to get an actual price for comparison.

When are you travelling? It may be worth holding your nerve a bit and see if Alamo Brits comes back down again.

Thank - hadn't spotted the excess figure and I will do a dummy booking like you say and see what happens.

Not going until the end of May so may be worth hanging on ... just getting twitchy now in case it goes the other way :-)

Argus are like a search engine they search all the mayor car hire companies and display the prices

They do include everything you need including zero access cdw if you purchase damage refund insurance hover over the cover items on the site it will show you.
Its about another £65 for 2 wks so it ups your rental price a bit

Have you checked the BA/Avis 7 days for 5 make 2 booking and save big check this post

Yeah, that's what I meant when I said the zero excess isn't included in the base quote - you need to add the 'damage refund' insurance, at a cost

Actually, on second look and reading what's included it seems it does include zero excess without having take their Damage Refund insurance.

So it looks the excess insurance they offer is unnecessary at least on the test booking I tried.

I have used them a number of times when travelling to South Africa and everything has always been included and never had any problems.

It dawned on me that while I haven't used Argus Car Hire specifically, they are in fact the same company as (or maybe technically sister company of) Holiday Autos and CarTrawler. I have used Holiday Autos on occasion without any problems (though not for US rental).

I guess that makes sense as their prices come out pretty much the same.

Thanks everyone - definitely food for thought, I'll have a mess around with the BA idea of 2 bookings, that's very clever :-) Feel more confident if I do end up booking with Argus now though.
