Help with different cars
I am looking to rent a car for a West Coast road trip (so lots of driving) for 15 days in October. There will just be 2 adults, so we don't need tonnes of space for luggage, although we will have a large suitcase and a carry on suitcase each. Looking at Alamo there is only a £15 price difference between all of the following: midsize car, standard car, fullsize car, and midsize SUV. The main priorities are a car that is comfortable to drive for long distances, can fit at least the two big suitcases in the boot, and not too wide as we are slightly scared of driving the roads in Yosemite!
Is anyone able to offer any advice please? Thanks |

For a road trip and if the cases will fit a saloon every time. The reason being that SUV's dont have a cover so the luggage is on view and hence a security risk.
I would always opt for a full size saloon.

I'd go full size saloon too. Don't worry about the roads as even the minor roads were built to accept larger cars than we are used to

Thanks both! That is interesting about SUV and the cases being on shown, I wasn't aware. We were thinking SUV as we may be more comfortable sitting higher up (I am pretty short and do struggle to see so much sometimes!), but no point if it is a security risk. Full size saloon is currently £386 for 15 days, which doesn't seem too bad to me.

I did a nearly 4000 mile road trip around the West Coast back in 1981, this to include Yosemite.
Bear in mind the cars were a lot bigger way back then! I had a huge Pontiac saloon and it was great everywhere including single lane highways and the roads in the National Park. I do agree however the elevated driving position in an SUV is nice.
