Road trip: Things to see and do between Charlotte-Columbia-Savannah

We're planning on doing a road trip to Florida from New York, via the mountains of Virginia off the I-81. I've found plenty to see and do all the way down past Roanoke but once in North Carolina, around Charlotte and beyond, I'm struggling to find anything particularly interesting within close range of the interstates until you get to Savannah.

Any suggestions? I'm looking for mainly scenery, gardens/state parks, viewpoints (although I think it's all flat by that point!), pleasant or interesting towns/cities, a bit of history, visitor centres etc. - all within just a handful of miles off the interstate.

I've been to Charlotte and I'm going again in October..

The actual city of Downtown Charlotte is dull just banks/businesses and hotels..

Around Charlotte you have places like Mooresville, Huntersville, Kannapolis, Cannon Village etc which are little towns I suppose and where I'll spend most of my time, but I'm there for a different reason to you. Lake Norman? that's quite nice.

Columbia is supposed to be nice too I've never been but friends have family there and really like it.

Historic Brattonsville is a nice diversion , Columbia has the riverbanks zoo, museum, state house etc although I would probably skip and head to Charleston, gorgeous plantations, the battery area and patriots point.

We prefer Charleston too but both are well worth a visit but my favorite is Savannah and the little guest house apartment we use

Thanks everyone - I will have a detailed look at your suggestions.

I'd like to visit Charleston but as we'd be doing a long road trip it looks a bit too far from the main route so thought Savannah would be a better idea this time.

What do you get to see at plantations? When I was last in Florida and driving to Atlanta we noticed some advertised on the way up I-75.

Yes the NASCAR is why I went before and why I'm going again in October, to do a race, tour the race shops with our son who wants's to work out there and see friends that work in NASCAR.
