Another car hire question (sorry!)

We will either be booking through Virgin or Alamo direct but we were told by a friend yesterday that we need to have a credit card to book it. Is this really the case? My issue is neither of us have a credit card and due to past problems our credit score wouldn't allow us to have one. We managed to fill in the online forms for the ADR's using our pre-paid currency card although it asked for a credit card, could we do this for car hire? Or use a debit card?

Thanks

I was over there couple of weeks ago, and I prebooked my car hire using a debit card without a problem. I used the same debit card at the desk to swipe on car pick up with no problem. I used same debit card at the hotel again without an issue

Debit card is fine with Alamo
:-)

Hertz wanted me to have a "credit score" done by them last year until I explained I was not a US Resident and had no bank or credit history in the US- so branch manager authorised agent to override this requirement

Instead of a card swipe on pick up we left a cash deposit. Collected the cash on drop off and had extra for duty free!

Have I read on here that although its fine to use Debit Card, you have to go to the desk (can't go straight to the garage or use the kiosks) and you have to show your return ticket or something? Is that right, or was I dreaming?

We were in the same situation (no credit cards) so looked into it and minded it all to be OK. We've since got Halifax Clarity Credit cards so negates our issue now.

Just to be aware that if you are using a Debit card they may hold an excess amount on your card until you return the car so I'm not sure if this would be the case in the USA and how much they would hold against your card as security.
