Driving from San Francisco to Monterey
Hi,
We are in the middle of planning our first west coast road trip and will be driving from San Francisco to Monterey but want to stop in Santa Cruz to take a few "Lost Boys" photos en route. Has anyone done this route and can offer any timing advice? We are looking to leave early (6-6.30am) to avoid city traffic in SF but also want to do a whale watch trip on the same day either 9am/2pm! Route planner is saying 2hrs 20min but i'm not sure if there will be traffic issues etc.. on the route. Many thanks in advance

Depends where you are leaving from. If downtown San Fran then I would add an hour to that plus the length of stop in Santa Cruz.

Then I would be adding an hour even at that time to be on the safer side.

Haha I'm kind of expecting that. I'm indulging my inner teenager who still absolutely loves The Lost Boys and it's more a case of "when in Rome"... If we're practically driving past it I'm stopping for a picture! Will literally be a stop outside very early morning mind
Thanks for the information though x

Hi have a look at sanctuary cruises from moss landing, we went with them in July and were lucky enough to see 11 humpbacks. They also have a marine biologist on board who also gives a good insight with various animals

Daft question but did you see any sea otters? That is what's stopping me taking a trip from Moss Landing... Route wise it would be perfect!

Hi on our trip we also saw sea lions in harbour, 3/4 sea otters and the when we left harbour on way out to deep water we saw 2/3 more followed by dolphins ,small group of 6/8 . Other people have seen pods of killer whales and large groups 100 plus dolphins
