Another car hire question sorry.
I have been looking online for a flydrive, and can anyone tell me if the basic car option is everything we need or do we need to buy more insurance cover over and above that when we arrive at the airport to collect the car?

You may find it cheaper to ignore the insurance options on the booking and book your own car seperately, we always do this if we book a FD. The basic insurance doesn't include enough for us, we need extra drivers etc and prefer the 'gold' or 'platinum' insurance options. Pussycat

Basic Insurance does not have everything you need we have just fallen into this trap and had to pay to upgrade to fully inclusive. This worked out at the same price as just renting a car so we have ended up paying twice

Agree entirely
I wouldn't be happy with basic car insurance As others have said its often far cheaper to completely disregard "free car" and book your own with full insurance. As likely as not you will either save money doing so or get a better car for the same cost. If the travel companies were pulling a stunt like that in Financial Services they would be part way through repaying Billions in mis-selling compensation!

Thanks for your replies. I take it that basic is the same as our third party, fire & theft.
Also they are quoting £3077 for 3 adults & 1 child with travel city direct, flying with Virgin, but Virgin has the same flights/times for £3600. Going by a lot of people on here, Virgin seem to be putting their prices up and I'm not sure if I should wait anymore until flights only become available with virgin in case they are a lot more expensive than originally expected. What do most folk do?

You need to provide more details on exactly what is included on the insurance before anyone can answer or advise on this.
The most important items you need are - 1. CDW/LDW to cover damage to the car. 2. Additional or Supplementary (ALI/SLI) third party liability insurance covering at least $1million. If you have both of these you will likely have what you need. |
