using fairfx is a BAD idea though as it blocks off a chunk of money until you get back home

I think you would be alright with the £200 credit limit as long as there is £200 available on it I think they ask for about $300 when they swipe your card this is not taken of your card just puts a hold on it,

I always upgrade at the airport, and the only funds that have ever been held were for the upgrade.

Alamo do not "hold" any money here's an email I received from alamo:

This is all good info, thank you.
I can see that Dollar will accept a debit card or a pre-paid card, although they want $11 a day for an extra driver.

I'm feeling much more comfortable about this now, I think as long as I book through Dollar or Alamo and check their terms on their website we should be OK.
