Try not to worry too much yet. My dad had a Stroke in 2012, and like yours had problems with his left eye, along with mobility in his left side.
The thinners and appointments are normal and he will likely be in them for the rest of his life. My dad also ended up on blood pressure, diabetic meds and some others I can’t remember. But, with physio and other help he was cleared to drive after 3 months, even though he was reluctant at first he took his time and now is pretty much the same as before. I wont lie, there will be frustration at not being able to do some of the normal stuff straight away and this can come in the form of a change in mood or attitude, and my dads stroke team told us this could be permanent but everyone is different so don’t be put off. Of course everyone is different and it will depend on the severity of the stroke, but it’s surprising how well people can be treated for it these days, and how quickly they regain the strength. My dad was extremely fatigued for about a month then seemed to ‘pick up speed’ he had to be told to slow it down by his stroke team. As you go Easter time I would maybe see how his recovery goes, maybe give a month or so then look at the holiday situation, but would still contact your insurance for advice even before you make a decision as there might be additional costs if it expires before you go and if not informed and you still travel that may cause problems. I wish you and your family all the best. Edited at 09:17 PM. |

I can't comment on the medical side but you also have the insurance aspect to consider albeit it is secondary to your dad getting better. I am hoping you have insurance and you may find that by a combination of speaking to your dad's doctors and the insurers that they take the holiday decision out of your hands. I am assuming this was unexpected and there were no previous medical problems that the insurer may have wanted to know. If so then I would speak to the insurer and make them aware of developments. They may not wish to cover your dad but they Should allow you the option to cancel on medical grounds if that is the case. Your dad's doctor would also have a view as to suitability of such a trip. Good luck to your Dad.

It's early days x x x
Don't do anything just yet. Easter is a long time away. Presume you're all insured? Could you go without your Dad? Why don't you give it a few months and see how his recovery is going? That will give you a better idea. I do understand how stressful everything is when it's still fresh, and raw, but things may calm down. But, either way, don't be too hasty cancelling, as long as you're all covered on insurance x x x |

I wouldn't cancel yet , my Dad had a stroke and made a full recovery despite looking like he wouldn't to our non medical eyes in the early weeks. A few months can make a massive difference. Put the holiday on the back burner for now , it won't matter if you cancel now or in a few months moneywise or to your travel insurance so hold fire for a bit. You might kick yourself if you cancel and his recovery is excellent .

If your dad is allowed to travel/wants to then WDW is one of the most accessible places on earth for folks with reduced mobility. Insurance is a key thing to check though as said.

Its early days so dont cancel just yet. Speak with your insurance company & say at present your using the upcoming holiday to give him something to focus on but you will be speaking with his doctors and taking their advice as soon as possible.
Hope you dear dad makes a full recovery very soon and you all get to go on your planned holiday.
