Taking 16 yr old niece - do we need letter of consent from parents

Hi,

As it says in the title, we are planning a Disney trip for end June when my nieces GCSEs finish. Her mum won’t fly so does not want to come but is happy for us to take her. We will be travelling as a family party with my own children and my other niece (adult sister of the 16 yr old). Do we need a letter of consent from parents re the 16yr old. Thanks

Yes you will. My son needed one when he went on holiday when he was 18 and his girlfriend was 17.

I took one for my 13yo nephew, we used a free template that we downloaded from Google. It included consent for medical as well as travel and had important info like allergies, medicines, his GP and travel insurance details. Thankfully it wasn't needed but it was something that I had in my travel folder as a hard copy and in my emails as a scanned copy.

I'm following too as we are similarly taking our niece (17) without either of her parents. I've been considering getting the authorisation notarised - does anyone have any experience of whether this is necessary?

You don’t need to get it notarised .

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Save yourself the worry and take one with you 🙂

I woukd say yes you need it, even just to cover giving consent to medical treatment in an emergency. Also can be an issue returning to UK, especially if you don’t have same surname.

Absolutely take the letter with you. It will take 2 minutes and cost you nothing.
You'd need it in Europe, I'm not certain but I can't imagine America will be more relaxed when it comes to other people's children!
Hopefully nobody asks you for it (especially if you have same name,) but if they do, it would be much easier to have it to hand!
Have a lovely trip!

We took our niece multiple times. We did have a written authority but were never asked for it.

The only times we got questions was at the UK border. Once they asked her who we were and once I was asked what her date of birth was. That put me on the spot a bit but luckily I managed to dredge it up!
