Car Hire to Port Canaveral

We've read that it can be cheaper to hire a car between WDW and PC especially with 4 of us. Has anyone done this before?

We are cruising for a week. I thought about hiring a car for first couple of days in Orlando and then driving to PC to drop it off. We would then hire a car from PC for the last 3 nights of our trip to WDW - save the cost of parking a car at the port.

Any thoughts?

We usually hire a car for the duration of our holiday and leave it in the parking garage at the Port if its a shorter cruise. Last year we hired the car for our first few days then drove it to the Avis office to drop off and got the Avis shuttle to take us to the port. We then went back to Avis on our return and got another hire car. If we do this again I wouldn't bother waiting in line off the ship for the shuttle bus as the line is loooong and slow, we waited a half hour and was told it would be at least that again so we left the queue and got a cab to Avis. I would just get the cab right away, it was only $10 or something like that.

Done both - for a 3 night cruise, you might as well park the car at the port.
For a longer cruise, it can work out cheaper to drop off the car at a rental firm and then re-rent at the end of a cruise.

We did the two-car-hire thingy with Budget and noticed that their queues for the shuttle bus was shorter than other car hire companies. We also got a free upgrade on the return car hire. So we felt it was worth it but we might have just been lucky.

Pros of parking in the car park - you can just drive off at the end of the cruise - no queues. You can stash unwanted luggage in the boot and not take it onboard.
Cons of parking - you are paying for a car rental that you are not using.
Pros of a double rental - can work out cheaper
Cons of a double rental - shuttle buses and queueing

We normally do 2 x one way rentals - only used Budget (ether via Auto Europe or US Rentacar) and very satisfied with the service we got on each of the 5 occasions... very easy & straight forward routine... well oiled system made drop off & pick up very easy.
