SORRY - failed my New Years resolution to keep my posts brief & to the point. 🙄😡

Same here in Chelmsford, the property situation is over-heating.

I took a "leap of faith" 26 years ago and moved from east London, mainly to afford a bigger property but also to get away from an area already becoming more "hostile". Boy am I glad I made that move !

I commuted to the City until I retired - didn't mind the travelling (3 hours a day roughly) but I really resented the cost - an annual season ticket in 2004 cost over £3,000. Goodness knows what it costs now.

The commute-ability to the City plus the exodus of people from the higher crime areas of London have pushed up the price of properties. Developers are cramming in new houses and flats on any bit of flat land they can find, including land that has never been built on because it's always been flood plains & water meadows. Prices for these new builds are obscene, in my opinion.

I've got a 1970 3 bedroom link-detached house of modest size and no real features (a "box") with garage, drive, small front and back gardens. It's a lovely little road to live in, neighbours are fabulous and I always say even if I won the lottery jackpot I wouldn't move . Paid £94,000 in 1993. The last house sold down this road was in 2015 and it went for £415,000.

A similar house round the corner had a large wrap-around garden. The owners built a new house on it and re-furbed their own to look the same. Sold both last year - for £500,000 and £550,000.

I own a house which I lived in for many years in a midlands village . Worth about £180k

But I moved out a year ago and left it empty and am renting a small terrace at the coast .
The house is very different in comparison . But I had to move away .

I can’t bring myself to sell it yet as it holds too many memories .

Live in a village near bishops Stortford (Stansted airport) so half hour train to London. DH and I spent most of our 20s and early 30s renovating our homes to move up property ladder. We were lucky it was possible then, but nowadays even houses that are a wreck still seem to sell for high prices and it isn’t as easy to make money out of renovating. I have friends whose children are forced to move further afield as the just can’t afford deposits... yet there are soooo many housing developments soon we will just blur into a London Suburb

I live in a tiny 2 bedroomed terraced cottage in a large village on the North Wales Coast. 2 mins walk to the prom 7 mins to the village itself (2 streets with numerous cafes shops hairdressers estate agents etc) paid around £15,000 in 1988 now worth around £15,000.Meanwhile DD moved to London 6 months ago for her first job since graduating and lives in a 3 bed terraced houseshare ( although 4 th bedroom now in the dinning room ) 7 mins walk from Clapham Junction and pays £800 a month rent!
The difference in prices between North and South is just incredible.

I hope you are happy in your new home - sounds like it look a lot of courage and a big move (emotionally) but also sounds like a positive fresh start and, to me at the moment, sounds idyllic

Just a thought, memories are in your mind not in a building. You will keep the memories wherever you are, they wont leave you.

Move your body for good if you have found the right place to be, your memories will come with you.

But that London Postcode is priceless!

We made good when we moved from London to our present house, with plenty of scope to do up!
Prices up North are so cheap, and lovely big houses for the cost of a tiny flat where we are.
