Cornwall-5 days- first timers looking for ideas
Morning,
Planning a trip to Cornwall in September and looking for suggestions of where to base ourselves (and any accommodation recommendations would be great). We love the walks along the coast, great beaches and pubs within walking distance with village feel. We are driving from Scotland, so making it a road trip. Would welcome thoughts on where to overnight to break the journey Thanks in advance!

We stayed in portreath area in a three bedroomed stone bungalow with hot tub. Portreath could be reached by walking along an old mining railway track (disused). With car, all areas were accessible.
Also stayed in a 4 bedroomed house in Tintagel. The coastal walks were magnificent up to Boscastle. St michaels mount, St ives, padstow, lands end were a few places we went to. Air BnB shows some great properties. Edited at 11:28 AM. |

We've stayed in Mawgan Porth near Newquay and loved it. Booked in to The Park. Great area but I'm not a fan of Newquay if I'm honest. Also stayed in a stunning house with spectacular views in Polruan. The house had a cedar hot tub and a scandi style bbq house. For a walker lots of place to walk to. From a driving point of view I would prob base myself in Fowey just over the water if I was going to that area. Love Cornwall & Devon. Devon is on my list for another trip.

Lived here most of my life (in Falmouth when not in the Armed Forces)and Policed it for 22 years until retirement from the Force. I have asterisked the ones that in my opinion are not to be missed. When researching, you will note that with planning, you can hit several on each day.
If you like walking and seeing, then Falmouth (albeit a town) covers a lot of bases. It is also absolutely flush with really good restaurants. VERY CLOSE TO FALMOUTH.. The Ferry to St Mawes or the ferry to Truro. Pendennis Castle. National maritime museum (Falmouth) The Ponsanooth gunpowder factory in Kennal Vale (Google it).**** The walk from Mawnan Smith Church to the Ferry Boat Inn. Pandora Inn. A walk on Anthony headland after using the King Harry Ferry. Trelissick Gardens and it’s 2 walks. FURTHER AFIELD TOWARDS THE EAST. Eden project near St Awful.**** Charlestown . Tintagel Castle Jamaica Inn (worth a stop on the way in for Lunch). Newquay aircraft museum at St Mawgan (really good and hands on). TO THE WEST. Lizard Village and walks round Black Head, Lifeboat Station, Manacles etc ****. Kynance Cove (A must Visit)**** Goonhilly radar station and museum. Porthleven (you will have seen images of seas hitting the clock tower). St Michaels Mount Porthcurno Beach, Telegraph Station and Minack Theatre (Stunning).**** Lands End (don’t pay, use the rights of way). Bottallack Engine Houses on the cliffs.**** Levant mine and horizontal beam engine (near Botallack). Very good museum. Wheal Geevor mine and heritage centre (tells story of mining brilliantly and you enter the mine).**** St Ives Harbour (reassuringly pricey). Gwithian Towans ( you could mark out your own football pitch and play in August on a hot day whilst disturbing nobody). Has great views. Walk from Godrevy NT site to Portreath along North Cliffs, taking in Hells Mouth (imagebelow)..**** That should give you plenty to research! Top tip... Newquay is a dump full of chancers, mainly from a couple of big cities in the North West, stag parties and drunken debauchery during the summer months. Think Magaluf with rain.

And very, very different to Cornwall, albeit a great vacation destination in its own right ... Hello Brian and I hope that you are enjoying retirement!

Surely Flushing is flush with good restaurants as well
I remember our first holiday in Cornwall back in 1970 (married 3 years then) and we stayed in a caravan at Holywell Bay then the following year in Praa Sands. Don't think that we've revisited Newquay since those days either We lived in Harrogate then long before the M5 was completed and had to do it in two legs staying overnight in Stratford. Mick
