First major news item you were aware of as a child?

Following on from the Millennium thread, it got me thinking. What was the first news event you were aware of happening when you were young?

For me it was the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. I was four years old and I remember seeing the images on the news constantly for days. I also remember the Berlin coming down quite vividly from the news.

The Kennedy Assassination although to be honest it did not mean that much to me - it was more I was aware of my mothers shock. The first major news event I remember being upset about was the Aberfan disaster. Still sends a chill down my spine.

One thing that sticks in my mind was the Yorkshire ripper when I was a teenager.

The Silver Jubilee, I was 7. I think that children were less aware of the news back then as there were only 3 tv channels and nothing on during the day.

I was reading the BBC special about that on the last anniversary. So horrific

I'm sure there were things before but I think I might've been sheltered from the news a bit when I was younger... first major story I remember and being scared of was the Falklands war and I remember the miners strikes too.

I think you are right about the news it was nothing like the 24/7 news you get these days.
I remember the silver jubilee and our estate having a big street party and getting a coin and a spoon at school.
