Connecting flights

I need to book a connecting flight from LAX if my flight leaves for home at 7pm what time should I aim to get to the airport for

If you are booking a flight that wont be on the same ticket unless you are travelling hand luggage only you will need to check in and clear security so you need to allow enough time for you flight to land, collect luggage, check in, clear security and get to your new gate. As a minimum I would be looking for a 3 hour gap.

HOWEVER

if that first flight is delayed / cancelled you will not be covered if you miss your flight home from LAX. In your position I would fly in the day before and make a night/ day of it in LA prior to getting my flight home.
