In 8 trips, we've never been refused using just the original passport alone.
This is onsite/offsite etc. We do have driving licenses to back up if it were needed but it never (not once) has been.

We took photocopies of our passports which were accepted everywhere in Disney - restaurants, bars and the little booths at the Food & Wine Festival at Epcot.
At Universal we were told by the barman at the Duff Beergarden that he could not accept photocopies (I guess because people could Photoshop a passport and print it pretending it is a copy), but he was more than happy to accept our photocard driving licenses as proof. Our driving licenses were also accepted off-site. Depending when the trip is, perhaps it is worth you both applying for provisional driving licenses? It's £34 but lasts for years and is convenient to carry in your purse as proof of age.

Many US establishments have an ID everyone policy. It takes the discretion as to age away from the server/cashier. Selling liquor to minors can result in significant fines, suspension of the ability to sell liquor and even total loss of license.
I am a 65 year old lady and would never be mistaken for under 21. I have been carded at my local grocery store when I buy a bottle of wine becuase their policy is ID must be shown by all purchasing alcohol. It's not a bad policy considering many cashier are 16 (and at some stores younger). It takes the peer pressure away from the employee whose friends may encourage him to " let them by" You will get served if you have ID but can be refused if the ID looks fake or altered. On college campusses it is not hard to obtain an ID or have your age raised. I think that may be why photo copies are not accepted. While not a technically a government issued ID, my son boarded a plane using his law school ID when he left his license at the gym. |

Some excellent advice and information on this thread, and interesting to read of people's different experiences. Thank you.
We have applied for provisional driving licences. May just bite the bullet and actually learn to drive! |

I am one of the unfortunates who gets asked for ID everywhere. We're just back from a week in Florida and a cruise and if I never again hear ''can I see your ID ma'am'' it will be too soon. I just use my passport and that has always been fine. Last week in Fort Lauderdale we were in a bar when the couple beside us (50s, Danish) showed photocopies of their passports. I asked the barwoman if photocopies are widely accepted and she didn't really want to give a straight answer but she did say ''for them yes but not for you or anyone I think looks under 25''. So that's something to remember if you/your child looks early 20s they would be more suspicious of a photocopy being a fake than someone who is clearly well over 21 so you're very unlikely to get away with a photocopy alone and they probably will ask for a second type of ID.

I'm 54 and can't drive for health reasons so if I fancy a cocktail I'll take my passport and if they won't accept it I'll be chuffed that they think I'm under 21 and will have a mocktail! I very rarely drink alcohol anyway -
the last time I had an alcoholic drink of any sort was a Glowtini in DLP last year. I can't remember the time before then. Edited at 09:28 PM. |

On previous trips and only 6 months ago, I was at WDW for 3 weeks.I do not drive/can't drive,so no licence. My passport was sufficient enough for all CM's who asked for ID when I ordered an alcoholic drink. Numerous times I was asked for my ID(so my original passport was shown) and not once was I refused because I didn't have a 2nd form of ID,actually i wasn't even asked for a 2nd form of ID.Enjoy your cocktail.

Thanks lucky-lady. It's weird how different places deal with ID in different ways. I shall certainly enjoy the cocktails!
