Thanks for all the replies. To be honest, I was thinking about getting some of our allowance from Walmart and putting it in the cases, although I always worry about breakages... But, I was thinking getting my son's allowance from MCO just to be right for the legal side of things, or is that being silly?

To correct earlier posts - yes he can purchase alcohol at MCO. He is leaving the USA and thus is subject to the law of the country in which his airline is registered so if Virgin or BA then it's UK law. He won't be allowed to take the purchase with him. It will be sealed and only handed to him as he boards the plane. And you can buy as much booze as you like but it will be subject to the limits allowed for duty free once you reach the UK. (They sell 1.5 litre bottles as some countries allow that amount - UK does not).

Thanks for the clarification Geoffa, we've just got back and I (incorrectly it seems) told my DS19 that he couldn't buy any alcohol at MCO as he wasn't 21, whoops, we will keep that one between you, me and the Dibb then!

Just to clarify - when you purchase stuff at MCO duty free they ask to see your passport and your boarding card. This confirms your age, your nationlity and which airline you are travelling with. And as mentioned above the tobacco and alcohol allowances are from 17 (not 18).

Thanks everyone for the advice. At least now we can let him buy a bottle of something at the airport without him having a teen meltdown he is hopefully going to uni in September and wanted to buy something to take with him...
Also, didn't know about the plastic bottles, as we have only bought wine and beer in store before . Thanks again Sue |

OP forget about his age in the U.S., you buy the limit for your party and as long as it's within the UK Customs limit you are fine.
