C&L Bangkok, Elephant Hills & Phuket adventure - March 2017 - Day 3 - Elephant hills camp

Day 3 – Elephant Hills

We got up at 4am and checked out at 4:30am, our transfer was already waiting. We were given some breakfast boxes from the hotel.

We got to the airport at 5 and checked straight in. We ate our breakfast box then headed through security. It was quite a boring wait but we sat at our terminal - A1 (my favourite band growing up )!

We boarded the plane on time, this was a small easyJet style plane, and left at 7:10am. The flight was only an hour so went very quickly. We were both sat either side of the aisle but for such a short flight, it didn't bother us. We were surprised that they served food, and we both enjoyed the pizza type roll and had some juice and tea.

The flight was uneventful and we landed at 8:30, 20 minutes ahead of schedule and got our luggage. It was very quick and didn't have to go through any immigration as it had been an internal flight. We were expecting our transfer to elephant hills to have been there waiting, however they weren't. It was such a small airport we soon were the only ones left from our flight and security had come over to ask where we were going, he said the elephant hills transfer usually waits with a sign. We started to get a bit worried and were just heading over airport services to see if we could get onto the wifi then our transfer arrived .

We got into the car and were on our way. It was about a 90 minute drive and we both slept the whole way! The early start had got the better of us!

We got to the camp about 11 and were met by our guide. We had some welcome drinks and she explained what would happen over the next three days, we were very excited ! We got given our keys to our tent then went to find it.

The tent was so amazing! We loved it . We got lots of photos then our bags were brought over to us. We got changed and sorted a few bits out. There were some gongs to tell you lunch was ready, this was at 12 and we were just walking over to the main area when we heard them. We helped ourselves to the buffet lunch, the massamam curry was very good. Water was provided and you could buy soft drinks at the bar. The surroundings are beautiful.

We met our group about 1pm, there was about 15 of us and a mix of all different ages. We left in a jeep that took us to the elephants.

We arrived at the elephant camp and walked over to see the elephants! There were two there just wandering around at that time. We were told about them then met the elephants. They were amazing, apparently there were 12 elephants who had all previously been working elephants and it kind of felt like this was a retirement home for them. They were well looked after and their keepers had spent their who lives looking after elephants so clearly had very special bonds with the animals.

While we were watching a couple of the elephants we heard a noise and another elephant had wandered over to the area but was stealing pineapples from the kitchen, it was so funny. She must of had about 8 pineapples hidden in her mouth and trunk !

We watched them play in the water and then went over to wash them. I loved this, it was so much fun .

We then went back to the hut we started in to cut up the food for the elephants.

It was then time to leave the elephants, just a few more photos This was the best elephant experience we had had.

We then headed down to the river were we were taken round it in canoes. Each canoe had someone rowing it. The views were incredible, we also saw some wildlife and stopped right under a snake in a tree .

Sorry I have included too many photos so have continued below :

We then headed back to camp and got back about 4.30. We were so hot we jumped straight in the little camp pool.

We then went back to our tent to get showered and relax. We were now pretty tired after our 4am start! We managed to stay awake though and got ready for dinner. They were showing an elephant documentary at 6:45pm which we went over to watch. There was also some evening entertainment - a dance show by children from a local school and a cooking demonstration. The show was so cute. We missed most of the cooking demonstration though as we were distraction by the camps kittens !

We popped to the gift shop and got our parents both a notepad which was made of elephant poo! We thought it was very novel, they were 200 baht each.

We then had dinner, I can't remember what time this was but it was buffet style again and was really good. We had a wine and beer which was 190 baht.

We headed back to our tent about 8:45. We needed to pack a rucksack for the next day as we were going to the river camp and could only take a bag with us. We then went to bed about 10.

It was the most amazing thing we've ever done on a holiday, we loved every second of elephant hills. Haha Chris said while we were out there, how many of our holidays have been planned around your love on animals...
