Winter Holiday Train - Set 10254

So, thought it was time we had something different around the base of our Christmas tree this year. I have the previous Santa's workshop so thought I could integrate it in with this train set.

So lets have a look at bag No 1. No train bits in here - this makes a bench with a lamp, two characters and what appear to be wrapped presents and a few toys.

Characters and base for bench:

Lampost with wreath gets added. May get my DH to actually get this to light up (he's great at that sort of thing):

Next are the presents and toys:

And finally the finished scene:

========================================

So onto bag No 2 and the train proper. The circle of track comes in 16 pre - shaped pieces which you join together. The inner diameter is 52 cms which is just nice for under a medium sized tree. I'll be making a base board later.

The driver (engineer / fireman) is next:

I forget to add his red neckerchief but will spot that later.

Finally, we start on the locomotive:

What I do find odd is that when I come to motorise this later most of the base gets discarded!

The rear wheels are fitted:

Then the front bogey which allows swivel is added with its wheels. Train configuration is 2-2-2 for the buffs amongst us.

The stack (complete with smoke), light (non working), whistle and steam dome are added. It now looks like a train:

And finally our driver is in place (complete with neckerchief):

On to the tender. This is relatively easy so I'll just show the pictures. However, there is an intriguing little package:

Have I won a gold ticket which entitles me to a trip to Lego in Denmark?

No such luck. It's a packet of metal axles:

The tender construction:

Locomotive and tender:

Now at this point I should construct the carriages but as I'm motorising this train, as it will go under a Christmas tree, I skip to the rear pages of the instruction book to install this little lot. I mentioned on a previous thread that the remote, receiver, battery box and motor add another £45 to this set!

As I mentioned having built the train and tender you now have to start dismantling the locomotive by removing the roof, the bogey and the rear wheels. It's easier if I show you the illustration:

and then the various parts removed:

You have to fit to fit this bad boy:

The lead must be fed up from underneath through the rear of the locomotive so that it can be connected to the receiver in the cab:

This the receiver which fits into the cab:

Suddenly you have a clutter of wires. I tidied up with some "Twistie".

The battery box is fitted into what was the tender's coal area:

A lead from the receiver connects to the top of this. It takes 6 AAA batteries.

The remote control takes another 3 AAAs.
So I place on the track and ... I've switched on the battery box in the tender. The remote controller flashes green when the activation button is pressed but no motion.

I search online and meticulously dismantle the four "motor" pieces to try and discover the fault. Eventually its all down to the fact that the remote has been set to channel four whilst the RD receiver has been set to channel one. Once I sort that we are in business:

Looking good Geoff... And how good will the lantern look if your husband can get it to light up.

Oh! He'll make it light up I can assure you and the station as well once I've built it.

I once had a railway layout - it was astonishing at night. There was a hot air balloon that flickered every so often like the flame was being ignited.

Geoff. Looking good, we don't do much Xmas stuff but that around the tree base will look very nice.
You are going to end up with more boxes than the Lego shop!

So let's finish the other two carriages.

This one will have a revolving Christmas tree:

So we build the base -

This spiral mechanism is fitted underneath:

We now create the base of the tree which will have this train running around it:

The Christmas tree in constructed and connected through to the spiral underneath. This will move the tree revolve when the train is running. You'll see this in the final video below:

And so to the caboose.

Base:

The bogeys are added for the wheels:

The conductor's (guard's) quarters get sorted - not the cup and the thermos flask (or is it a lamp ?):

Windows and walls get fitted:

The snow flake and coloured bulbs pieces gone on each side:

Wheels are fitted and then the roof:

The complete caboose:

The complete train - watch out for the revolving Christmas tree!
