Question claiming dla before diagnosis?

ds is waiting for a full autism assessment and the special needs coordinator at school said that as they are going to test him I should put in a claim for dla? I wasn't aware it was something you could claim for and would he even qualify without having a formal diagnosis?

Hi
You don't need a diagnosis to claim for dla, just need to prove that his care and mobility needs are greater than an 'average' child of his age.we did wait until diagnosis to claim for our elder son with asd however as found it easier to provide proof of his needs once he had been through the assessment and was receiving support at school and home.

Like nadya says you don't need a diagnosis it is for you to say what extra care and support your son needs compared to other children his age. It is better though I'm led to believe to have as much documentation as possible but as you haven't got it yet maybe ask if school can write something stating the extra support your son needs at school. DLA could well contact school too they sometimes send out a questionnaire kind of thing, or maybe your GP.
My daughters DLA is up for renewal this year and I'm dreading it but it's something needs doing and worth it for funding extra stuff for her.

If your Son is still waiting for an assessment, I would wait and get guidance on the form from those assessing; Ed Psych, Speech Therapist etc... And take a photocopy of your application form, it's helpful when it comes to renewals.

Under 16 claim Dla, 16 and up its Pip. You dont need a diagnosis but what you do need are professionals to back up what you're saying. Your child will need more care than a child of similar age. I have 2 boys on DLA both diagnosed with autism

My daughter has autism and she gets DLA too, it does make things a bit easier, 1-1 swimming lessons for example mightve been out of our budget without it and it's so good for her as she has hypermobile joints too.

Op ,it’s not the diagnosis, all they require is how the claimant copes from day to day and what are their NEEDS,and what assistance they require, focus on that and you should be ok,also bondy tip,if asked how many days per week they require this it’s SEVEN, for how long ,how many times, simply put VARIES,otherwise you may inadvertently stitch yourself up, good luck.its a headache ,but worth it in the end, bondy.

I would also recommend putting, as many letters from Drs etc as you can. I would also recommend going on the site Benefit and Work as it really helpful.
