Hi,
We usually book car hire with alamo via an agent but avis through ba is coming in more than a hundred pounds less for a full size suv. Are there any issues with avis, anything I should watch out for?
Thanks,
Alifin

Good company. £100 is a saving thats not to be sneezed at.
Join Avis Preferred before you make the booking as this helps you out as you can then link the booking to your account as opposed to having to ring up to link them if you join later.

We used BA/Avis fly-drive last November because their price at the time was just too good to ignore.

As Mr Morrow suggests join Avis Preferred and link your booking with BA and you'll be able to skip the counter and go straight to the garage. The only downside as far as we were concerned is you can't choose your car as you can with Alamo. It is pre-allocated but if you don't like it you can change to one in the swap line.

Have you tried Andy at Discount Florida Car Hire? They’ll quote Alamo and other options and they are cheaper than Alamo (but with all the same benefits as booking direct).

Avis are fine though, we used them last year as we had a BA/Avis fly drive. If you do decide Avis then join Avis Preferred and link your booking and it gives you their equivalent of Alamo ‘Skip the Counter’ and you can bypass the desks and go straight to the garage for your car.

You won’t get to choose from a row of cars aka Alamo but you can take a look at the ‘Free to Swap’ row as long as you have booked an intermediate or above level car.

Avis is great never had an issue with them, another vote for joining Avis preferred makes picking up the car so easy, if you don’t like the car you’ve been given go back to the kiosk and they will swap it for you, dropping a few $$ May get you an upgrade

A $20 works wonders, but despite all the horror stories about feckless counter service some staff are more than happy to do people a turn without expectation of a reward.

If it looks like a "tipping" situation, i tend to visibly make a show of removing a bill from my wallet while asking in a friendly slightly conspiratorial manner. "I don't suppose you could check to see if you have something a little nicer round back, for a straight swap". Its also less embarrassing if you give a cheery cover story or good reason for your request... eg "I always wanted to drive a Lincoln"...or whatever car you aspire to
