Is renting a sensible choice at the moment?

Hi. I'm just curious wether in today's climate if renting DVC is a good idea or not? Toying with renting points if available for Grand California with David's but not sure if in the uncertainty that this is a sensible option in case things go wrong again covid wise or the kids vaccinations not being good enough etc.

What are eople's thoughts?

Does David offer travel insurance. That would be my biggest concern. If you can get a reservation at Grand Californian as a renter I would go for it. Be advised DVC-Rental offers travel insurance.

I wouldn't personally book anything that wasn't fully refundable until travel restrictions have been lifted and travel to the US has been happening for at least a short while.
Are you hoping to go at a popular time of year or would you be able to wait a little?

It's 10 months out now so probably won't have much longer to book.

No way would I rent DVC as a UK resident at this point.

I have absolutely no confidence in UK-US travel at this moment. I've rented my DVC points out.

I've been to the US every year since 2006 and it hurts but I'm not looking again until I see travel resume for a good long while. I especially wouldn't book anything non-refundable which DVC rental usually is

Thanks for the views and replies. I decided against going this route. Too much uncertainty. I booked a Disney Good Neighbor Hotel in Anaheim instead. $200 deposit so if all goes wrong again it won’t be such a hit.

Could be a very sensible choice, never have savings been so much.

Once it’s all back up and running it is unlikely to shut down. Try and agree with your renter they will try to re- rent the points if your trip falls through.

I read this thread with interest. I’ve rented points from dibbers with great success previously and would like to rent for two nights for my April/May 22 trip.

I’m guessing at the moment if travel was to go awry for any reason the money for renting points is more or less lost?

Would travel insurance cover the cost I wonder if renting from a private individual?

I doubt you would be covered unfortunately.

I am slightly concerned as I have several points that I will be given back by DVC in December to use for bookings by the end of May 2022 under their international Covid policy. As a family we can’t travel by that time, and so I will be looking to rent them out, but I suspect I will only interest US guests now as I think for UK renters the risks will be too great.

I’d love to say I would make a booking for people and refund them if they can’t travel, but the points will expire at the end of May and be lost, so I stand to lose a lot of money if I can’t rent them out.

It’s a rubbish situation, although I am grateful that DVC have even allowed us this chance to use them by May, as they didn’t have to do that. Part of me at this point wishes I didn’t own DVC, as not being able to travel never entered my head when I bought in.
