Do American shops still give free plastic bags?

It's been awhile since I was there, but do the supermarkets still give you plastic bags for free? I remember the cashier in Walmart putting only one or 2 items per bag in the carrier bag roundabout thingie, so we would end up with loads by the end of the trip.
I know you can buy the stronger bags, but wanted to check if the law had changed as it has over here.

That's interesting - do you happened to know if they have the bag for life type bags to buy - we could then just buy some and leave in the villa for the next visitors?

Yes, they do. They're quite thick and I bought mine home for re-using last week.

Here in Florida now and the supermarkets are giving as many plastic bags as ever. Think Whitequeen may be referring to California where single use plastic bags have been banned for quite a while, but not so here in Florida yet.

That would make sense - we have been to California a few times are they are more advanced in the Eco department.

Absolutely not the case in Florida. The only place that doesn't have free bags is Aldi.
