Generally it means the food is served on several large plates or bowls and people help themselves.

Food is brought to table by server and is in bowls to share. If you need more of anything just ask and they refill. Ohana, garden grill are family style.

It’s basically ( as far as I can tell) the new way of saying all you care to eat. Just like others have said big dishes are brought to the table and you help yourselves and can ask for more if you want it.

‘All you care to eat’ usually means buffet. ‘Family style’ means it is all brought to your table and everyone helps themselves.

It isn’t the new way of saying all you care to eat. It means that you stay sitting at your table and platters are brought out for the group to share. You can ask for these to be refilled so effectively you can eat as much as you like, but the term refers to the style of serving not the food limitations.

We really enjoyed the family style- less choice than at a buffet but providing you like the menu its a relaxed way to eat- especially with kids no back and worth carrying plates- food usually served quickly too

You can ask for more, whether you'll get more is another thing.
We had a late breakfast at Ohana last time we visited and were near the end of the breakfast period. When I asked for thirds (I know, I know) I never received any. In fact I don't think we saw our server after she half refilled our platter the first time (and left the bill at the same time). I think they were eager for us to leave so that they could start setting up for the lunchtime crowd.
