Mobile Radiator help - switched off but still hot

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I feel I’m clearly failing at being a grown up/home owner here!

We have recently switched one of the radiators in the house off, as the room gets far too hot with it on. However I noticed today that it’s still hot. Anyone know how to (simply) resolve this?

This is what the setting is currently at:

That symbol doesn't mean off, its means frost protection, so it will come on at a lower temperature. I think? Or it only comes on at a certain temperature?

I'm a rubbish adult too, but I know it doesn't mean off!

The thermostatic valve can fail over time and may need changing. That can be done by just changing the head not the whole valve. A ten second job!

The lockshield valve at the other end of the rad could be open too much. Crank it down a bit and see if that changes things.

If not change the TRV.

The quick check is to unscrew the TRV and get a plastic shut off cover that you screw on and will totally shut the rad off. That will show if the TRV is at fault. Screwfix sell those covers, we use them to drop rads off when decorating.

How does it switch off then? It goes from that to 1 and there’s no zero?

Hmm... I think this is a “call my dad for help” job. I am so rubbish! No idea what these valves are :|

They never switch off totally. The * is to protect the system in case of frost.

To fully shut the rad and isolate it you need one end at * and the other end cranked off tight

No not really. Lets say you have the rad off for decorating and the one end cranked off tight and the TRV on a * setting.
If you have a really cold night the * setting will open up and you will flood the house!

Thats why we take the TRV off and crank down the pin that sticks up under the TRV down tight. Then it will never open up.
