Charging family for work

My husband is a self employed plumber. Last year he created a bathroom from scratch for my brother and sil , was a lot of work and travel. We felt awkward charging but had to, so worked out quote and halved it for them.

My.dh is about to re fit my parents bathroom and we felt so awkward but cant afford to do it for free. Told them a price again halved. Parents are fine but i feel.so bad
Am i a horrible person, is it wrong to charge anything? !

When you say re fit your parents bathroom do you mean that DH is buying and fitting everything or just fitting what parents have brought, so just the labour?

If just the labour then I don't think charging parents is right, if actually buying everything then parents should pay for that but not labour costs, charging siblings I don't see a problem with but not parents.

We have the same problem when family want work doing. I’m sure your parents know DH is running a business and understand. He is doing a good half price deal and they are getting someone they can completely trust and don’t have to worry about the job or who is entering their home.
If DH does it for free then your parents may feel awkward about it.

I think they should only pay for all the materials, not for the labour tbh.

Its a funny one. I suppose though if it is stopping him earning money then yes he should charge. If it was done in spare time though i dont think i would want to charge for labour.
If it was my parents or inlaws they wouldnt want it for free amyway.
My SIL is a hairdresser and we pay same price as everyone else and wouldnt expect anything else. Dont think her sister ever pays though!

it would cost your family twice as much if someone else did it, so don't feel bad, they are getting a bargain ! I wouldn't expect any tradesmen in my family to charge me nothing for work they did for me.

You are running a business just because two of your customers are family doesn't mean they shouldn't pay.
