Cancel SATNAV and use Google Maps off-line

After testing Google Maps offline all week I’m thinking about ditching the SATNAV - ALAMO Standard SUV booking (pickup DCC) – saving £114!

However slightly apprehensive that I’ll end up will a “lower spec” Standard SUV as opposed to a "higher spec" with a fully working SATNAV.

Any thoughts / advise?

I use Google maps all the time through Android Auto and it's been brilliant, I will also be using it on my trip in 4 weeks.

Might be worth taking a phone mount for the car so you can put it in your eye line.

I don't really use google maps and rely on my iphones map or my own cars sat nav. I do have the Google Mapsapp on my phone - can you give me a quick rundown on using offline as I'm conscious of using lots of date on our travels using the iphome

Google maps is brilliant, I use it in my truck in UK. If I use it in Orlando in offline mode would I be correct in thinking it won't use any data. I also have a Garmin with USA maps which I always take.

Google maps uses very little data but downloading maps to save data is easy.

1. Open the app
2. Select the menu (3 horizontal lines)
3. Select "Offline Maps"
4. The map screen will open with a highlighted area, drag this to the area you want to download.
5. Select "Download"

You can download most of Florida for 400mb of storage.

I would advise using data though if you can, getting traffic updates and detours is very useful.

We used Google maps for the first time during a week at a gite in rural France in June. Downloaded the map before going, turned off data, turned location on, and everything worked perfectly - would've been lost without it 😂
(If you keep data turned on it updates any traffic issues etc in real time)

Satnavs are not what you seem to expect

they're tomtom like devices you mount on the dashboard, and you'll need to pick a device up

the GPS units on onboard tablets are activated via a subscription. The rental agencies will not activate them after the "trial period", so even if your car has the built in satnav, chances are it will not be functionnal and you'd still use the tomtom like device they'll hand out to you

if you feel confident about the use of offline maps, then save the money.

as they say, better in your pocket ...

I'm here now and always use Google maps.. I Download offline but have a 3 pay and go data Sim in the handset so I get to use spotify and traffic, plus you need data active to search for an address via voice control, though you can manually type this when the vehicle is not moving.
