Mobile Esta and Social Media

I thought I read that the latest ESTA applications now force you to add your Social Media stuff like Facebook. Not sure if it's just for a Visa application or for the ESTA as well. Anyone know the answer?

Yes - we did our ESTAs in late May.

The question will ask to tick a box against Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linked In.

Or a box saying none - which we ticked. Not sure what happens if you tick any of the other boxes.

I am on FB & Insta, my husband is on FB and linkedin. We just put our id's on the form. Neither of us post anything controversial - both our ESTA were approved.

Has the ESTA changed recently to make the social media question mandatory?

Back in January the social media question was optional. You didn't have to fill it in (I didn't). On the help page of the official ESTA website it still implies that it's optional (see here and search for 'social media'). Is it no longer optional?

If it's changed, I'm surprised this wasn't reported anywhere. Perhaps the American authorities quietly changed it whilst everyone was focused on the coronavirus?

Sorry to cause confusion. I thought I read somewhere it was now mandatory, it wasn't on the last one I completed nearly 2 years ago. Maybe it's just mandatory for a Visa now.

I think it was June that it changed.

so what do they want you to put down your Facebook name? the link to your page? They still won’t see anything apart from profile and cover photos due to my account Settings.

Totally pointless imo a terrorist is hardly likely to put the log in names for the accounts they use are they!
