NY Taxi Transfers JFK
I have read taxi fares to and from JFK are fixed at $52.50 excluding tolls and tip.
We were thinking of doing the air train and tube which will be $14 but will take about 1.30-2hrs in total. I’m having second thoughts now as it’s just myself and my daughter and for the sake of $40 should we get a taxi. How much are the tolls and what should I tip. Has anyone done the air train and tube. What are your thoughts? Also I need to get to JFK at 08.30 will we get stuck in horrific rush hour traffic! Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

I’ve been thinking about this as well and we’re probably going to get the train. We’re staying on Long Island so wouldn’t get the journey over the bridges into Manhattan any way and I can’t imagine the trains are that difficult.

Can't comment on the train or the cab as we had a private car from our hotel at a fixed rate of $75 inc tip and tolls which we thought was very reasonable. It did take us 2.5 hrs to get from Midtown to JFK, this was at 1pm, luckily we'd lots of time for the flight

We did a taxi into the city and it was a fixed price but the traffic was bad and it took nearly 2 hours to get into the city, the part going over the bridge into Manhattan was good to see but by that time we were fed up, plus we had to set the drivers Sat Nav and he still couldn't find the hotel so we had to drag the cases over three crossings to get there.
Going back to JFK we took the air train and the A train we didn't need to change as we were round the corner from the subway station, a far more smooth way into manhattan. There are a couple of You Tube Videos that have walk throughs and how to buy your ticket

I've booked a car with taxes and tip included. It was through booking.com and is with a company called Rideaways. We used them in New Orleans too and I was pleased with the service. The driver meets you in arrivals with your name on a sign.

Yes, fixed fare both from JFK to Manhattan & from Manhattan to JFK (even when flagged down in the street as we did).
When you add tolls & tips to the fixed fare, you're looking at a total cost of $70-$75 each way. |

Regarding public transport vs cab, depends on direction/time of day, amount of luggage / people and where you are staying relative to stations.
Travelling into Manhattan on my own, I almost always take the train (though more often LIRR than subway), back out is a mixture of train or Uber depending on time of day. With family and all their luggage, it tends to be Uber. For tipping, $10 is usually fine, total fare will depend which bridge / tunnels are used but the $70 figure is a good ballpark number. Where are you staying? |

We just took the metro / train back to the airport which was about 10 times quicker then the taxi we took getting into Manhattan! I wouldn’t hesitate to do that next time as traffic in and out of Manhattan is awful!

Taxis look at $70/$75 although the cab going back to the airport I gave $80 as he was so chatty and full of information about the areas we where driving through and when we came to heavy traffic he asked how long we had and drove us a different way with loads more chatter about the areas. The one going into Manhattan never spoke, he begrudgingly got $70.
