Laura Ashley - 2700 jobs at risk..

Sky News: Coronavirus: Laura Ashley set to become first retail casualty of crisis

The fashion to homewares shop Laura Ashley is set to become the first retail casualty of the coronavirus crisis, placing 2,700 jobs at risk.

Sky News reported at the weekend how it was scrambling for a funding lifeline to avert collapse but the company all but admitted defeat on Tuesday, saying it had filed intentions to appoint administrators.

Such a shame. Both of my children’s bedrooms were decorated in Laura Ashley furnishings for many years.
They’ve been in trouble for a while now though haven’t they? This must have tipped them over the edge.
I feel for all those members of staff with jobs at risk

Laura Ashley has been struggling for years, it is quite easy to see why when you go into a store now versus twenty years ago. DH and I usually pop in when we go to Harlow and we have been saying for ages that their demise looks imminent.

I don’t think it is anything to do with Coronavirus.

I think that L Ashley are using Coronovirus as an excuse. It is no secret that they have been on the brink for years.

I have looked at two numbers in their 2019 annual report, they have a June year end, so nine months ago.

Comprehensive loss: £16m

Retained earnings: negative £96m

They were struggling.

Coronavirus is to blame for a lot of things but the collapse of Laura Ashley isn’t one of them.

To be fair, a poor two weeks can be enough to tip teetering companies over the edge. I believe we are about to see a lot of casualties on the High Streets. Food and essentials will be fine. Clothes and luxuries - folks will be saving their money.

It is nothing to do with Coronavirus. And no, a poor two weeks does not typically send a multi million pound business to the receivers.
