We've done it the other way - Orlando to Miami and it's a fair way.
On arrival we were heading to Naples, but stayed in Miami the first night and I'm so glad we did because it allowed us to head to Miami Beach and that area and I absolutely loved it there. |

Any suggestions on a hotel near the airport that’s easy to get to with a car and kid friendly/ safe area?

Only time we ever stayed by the airport was at the Hilton Blue Lagoon Drive, it's literally 10 mins in the car from the airport, you can sit round the pool and watch the planes take off, it's that close. It was a nice hotel, clean and comfy and a nice pool area, we ate at the McDonalds 5 mins round the corner as we were too shattered for anything else. There are a few other hotels in close proximity, there's a Hampton Inn & a Homewood Suites on the same road.

We've stayed at the Hampton Inn at Fort Lauderdale West/Pembroke Pines. About 30 easy minutes from the airport in a low crime residential area.. Maybe 2 miles from US-27 for the next day. A nice swimming pool behind the hotel and a Cracker Barrel next door you get to by walking through the car park, complete with a family of raccoons who live under the bridge you use.

I think there has been some really good advice offered already. But adding my 2p’s worth, I’d book a hotel near the airport and start the drive to Orlando early on the next morning. Because of the time difference you are likely to be up early and can make a good head start before the traffic builds up.
I remember my first time driving in Orlando in 2014, arrived after a delayed flight, landed to terrible crazy rain, then the sat nav wouldn’t load up. Wished I’d have had a look at google maps first! |
