The one issue I can see is if there is a major accident at a point on the highway that can't be bypassed. In many places its one road in and one out, if its blocked then its a problem.

We had one time when we nearly missed a flight out of Miami, luckily we had left tons of time but we were at a standstill for nearly four hours while they cleared the road. Ocean on both sides and nowhere to avoid it.

We drove Orlando (davenport area) to Islamorada one day, including a trip past to do 7 mile bridge, overnight stay and back to Orlando the next day.

Used the 27 rather than the toll road.

Good point! Going back to Miami before flying home, we’ve planned to stop in Vero Beach a few nights, but I’ll still be sure to leave plenty of time!

I’ll look into this! Ideal to miss the tolls - the one thing I dislike about Florida!

Yeah I max out at 13 hours in one day, it’s an easy drive on a clear shot through

Reef - we've visited the Keys from SW Fl quite often, I recommend heading up the 27 or 441, avoid the Miami area. I Google mapped, Islamorada to Orlando route, showing via the 441 or 27, these routes also avoid tolls. See HERE. Drag and drop the gold man onto the road if you wish to 'drive' some of the route.

Heads up, approx 25 miles after leaving Key Largo it's a left turn onto the 997, signed Homestead (Krome Ave), you'll see Race Trac as a marker.
