Episode 5 was wonderful. Just for including the Thanos Copter and Throg (Frog Thor). The other Lokis were excellent, especially Richard E Grant's original comicbook Loki. And alligator Loki! So silly and so wonderful - it would've been great if the show was a silly comedy from the beginning.

So who do folk think is the one (or ones) behind the 'curtain' who had set up the TVA and taken all those variants to be TVA operatives?

Another Loki?

Kang?

Mephisto?

We think it’s another Loki - but who knows!

Agree that episode 5 was great - I had a good chuckle in a couple of places as well.

I'm hoping it will be Kang.

But I suspect there are lots of misdirections making us think that it might be Kang and, in the end, it'll just be another Loki. Or the same Loki we all know and love behind it all.

Random, but I read today that Throg was actually voiced by Chris Hemsworth - and there was a deleted scene with him earlier in the series as well!

I’m completely confused (not hard!). Hopefully will be clearer in season 2.

Considering that what happened in the season finale fundamentally changed the MCU, introduced a major Marvel character, and paved the way towards one or two forthcoming movies, the way the episode was directed was a little flat. Perhaps a little too exposition?

Just in case…

The man in the castle was the one behind the TVA - Kang the Conqueror, a major Avengers villain. As he explained, originally there was the multiverse - an infinite number of alternative realities each with a different history. He became aware of the multiverse, crossed over to different universes, met alternative versions of himself, and that started a war across realities. Kang stopped that and destroyed the other realities, then set up the TVA to ensure there remained just a single reality/timeline so as to prevent the multiverse war from happening again.

Having experienced ‘everything’, Kang then set up home outside the timeline ensuring the TVA continued and slowly went a bit crazy. Sylvia killed him, and in doing so, that caused the multiverse to return with multiple versions of Kang and possibly multiple versions of the TVA. Loki was returned to the TVA, but this was in a different universe, and was being run by a different Kang.

Thus, the multiverse is born. That leads to the next Doctor Strange movie - the multiverse of madness. And the “What If?” animated show coming next that shows different possible realities.

Thanks Nimbus, really helpful explanation. I hadn’t twigged about the last part of your explanation - it all makes sense now 😁
