I have absolutely no idea where this nonsense rumour came from (not a shot at the OP) it’s been over FB forums for weeks to the point it’s become an expectation. I don’t see why people continually build other peoples hopes up just to be continually let down.
The July 4th rumour started when Biden said July 4th would be a day to celebrate returning to normal. This was months ago and at the time he gave the example of Americans having family BBQs. They have moved along a lot quicker but the point stands I think that this is their day to celebrate domestically. Travel returning never was even hinted at my Biden or anyone in a position of authority. The Irish governemnt for example met virtually with Biden on Paddy's Day (March) around the time of his July 4 remark and they said 'late in the year' then.

The newer Labour Day rumour has come from an American official saying an uptick in international and busienss travel ''after Labour Day'. Unfortunately that spread around quickly with the literal date of the day after Labour Day.

I am not a pessimist or a vacation killer. I can't wait for the birder to reopen even though I am now moved over to Feb and Aug 2022 but these rumours are not fair I think as they get people's hopes up and crush them. Whether it's people spreading around dates on social media or some of those travel 'experts' like Simon Somebody who say there wil be a big joint announcement at 5pm and there's... nothing or some random Twitter person sees Biden is going to make a remark in Miami and says 'here's the announcement guys' when he's going to visit a site where 150+ have perished. It reaches levels of the absurd sometimes.

The most promising word we have is 'after Labour Day'. That is not very specific but it's the best we've got so far.

And thinking about American politics and culture this will never be announced on Independence Day and it won't be a big fanfare that will break into the news feed over there. It will be great news over on this side of the pond but it won't get a mention over there unless political adversaries find a way to make it a negative.

In fairness to Simon Calder, this one was Paul Charles. Simon Calder told us to book with Thomas Cook, it was all going to be fine.

The only thing we tend to pay attention to on Independence Day is ourselves. And that includes the President.

And you are correct that he was addressing us about returning to normal by the Fourth of July. I’m not sure why anyone would imagine that he would be talking to people in another country over which he has no control at all.

But maybe some good news will be coming soon for you. There is always hope until Biden says otherwise.

And now it’s time to grill my burgers and dogs and get the beer cold. Cheers to you all. I’m glad we’re now friends instead of adversaries as in days of old. I hope you will all be able to visit very soon.
