Virgin single and return flights

Wonder if someone can help

Was looking at flight prices using miles for single flights and return flights

For example if I book a return from 1st June to 8th June it's £553 plus 70.000 miles for premium out upper class return

If I price the premium outward flight it's £334 plus 22.500 miles

The upper return is £560 and 47500 miles

Now the miles stay the same at 70.000 but fee and taxes are £894

Why does the cost increase by £341 for the 2 singles and how is it calculated

It's just the way the taxes and surcharges are added at booking. They want full surcharges etc if you book a single and it's discounted on the return leg if booked together.

It’s the way it’s always been. It’s the same with BA too.

For peak times I book the outbound on release date to ensure I get the date I want. When the return becomes available I call to book and get them to turn the original booking into a return to get the cheaper taxes/fees.

I haven’t booked Virgin ones for 18 months or so. Are they now releasing reward flights on the day they release the flight again? They stopped doing that when I last booked some and it was random when they released them. They seemed to do a batch of dates at a time.

only seems to be out of peak season and for premium and upper class

the economy flights seem to be released about 5 days in. this could be to do with getting max retail for them and also if the flights have been part of a fly drive or holiday package as with those you can get flights further out than 331 days
