Our next big trip will be Hawaii, we thought about including it in past west coast trips but felt we couldn't give it the time it deserves for the expense. When we do go, the main focus will be Hawaii and just a few nights stop over somewhere else.

We've previously done San Francisco, San Diego, Anaheim, Las Vegas, NOLA, LA x 3 so thinking maybe Chicago for a few days.

We will have about 12 nights for Hawaii and still undecided how to split it. My dd's will be 18 & 21 (OMG how did that happen ) so trying to find a balance for us all. My thought are 7 or 8 nights in Oahu/Waikiki for sure. I'm torn between going to Maui for a few nights or Aulani I know we would love it there but I wonder should we be trying to do more.

Anybody any thoughts?

We've obviously never cruised Hawaii but we have done a few Caribbean cruises. It would depend on your ports, how much time you have etc. We avoid the ship run excursions unless it's something we can't do ourselves or extremely time permitting. We've never hired a car on a cruise stop so I can't comment on that, just be sure to allow plenty time to return the car and get back to the ship.

Usually what we do for each port is take small group tours, they usually give a guarantee of getting you get back to the ship on time. Research the port and look for tours and recommendations. Avoid the big bus/coach tours, usually ones that take approx 12 people work out best, and are normally about the same price point as ship run tours but you're not spending your day like cattle lol Alternatively if car hire is recommended for that port and you're comfortable with it then that is good

Check out the cruise section here on the Dibb

As it’s 13 years since we did this trip, have a look at the ports of call section on Cruisecritic for recent advice and guidance. From memory it was very easy to do the car hire with pick up shuttles waiting for those who had pre-booked.
Memorable stuff we did - driving the road to Hana on Maui; a helicopter flight over the Na Pali coast on Kauai, Volcanoes NP, Big Island, driving the Waimea Canyon on Kauai. Where the ship was in port overnight we did a two day car rental and parked the car at the port.
One word of warning is that this was our first cruise and we were hooked - our next cruise will be number 46, so it’s very detrimental to your bank balance!

We were meant to be going this July for DH’s 70 and our ruby wedding anniversary. All cancelled now so probably won’t book again

That’s a real shame, I didn’t realise holidays for July were being cancelled. Hope you can plan something.

Not officially cancelled but we decided to cancel and forfeit our deposit as the trip included 4 hotels and a cruise. We were going to LA, Honolulu, an island cruise week and the Las Vegas. Been to all except the Hawaii part before but that was the big part. Age and insurance costs mean we are unlikely to get there now but have been to many far flung places in our time so being philosophical about it.
