Flour in white sauce
I’m turning leftovers Speg Bol into lasagne and I can’t get plain flour nor have cornflour left
Only have self raising flour Could I still use this to do a basic white sauce as I turn into cheese one or will it not work |

Usually we only have SR flour in our house and so I always use it. Works out fine.

Yes , you can use any white flour to make a sauce. I use either for a roux.
Weirdly we could only get plain and no baking powder ... finally I could get baking powder , but now there’s only self-raising available here too and plain has vanished LOL |

Haven’t had flour in our large supermarkets for some time, but I’ve found our Spar and Londis usually have some in stock.

I have managed to buy flour in my local Asda plain SR and strong flour, not managed to get yeast though. DS is trying his hand at making sour dough as you don’t need yeast apparently!

If you want to make this super-indulgent then use double cream instead of making a flour and butter roux. Simply heat the cream and let it reduce and thicken. I am on a low carb diet so use this all the time instead of a flour based sauce - cauli cheese, lasagne, moussaka, fish pie etc (and yes before anyone says I don't use pasta in my lasagne - I use celeriac)
or - use some cream in the white sauce to make it richer if you're still using the roux method And yes - plain or self-raising are fine |
