Can you extend your stay by paying cash?
DH and i are back to considering DVC (for what feels like the 100th time) and welcome all tips!
We’re looking to purchase between 160 and 200 points, probably for SSR or BWR to allow for a decent length of stay every year. One query I’m hoping Dibbers can help with is...say we wanted to stay for 14 nights but our points only covered 11, can we pay cash to stay those extra 3 nights? Also; 1- Has anyone done this? 2- did you have to move rooms? 3- did you manage to book it the same time as your DVC reservation? Thanks!

Yes you can extend with cash - during Dorian we managed to book another room at OKW (we were in a studio - we asked for another night but ti wasn't available - they moved us to a 1 bed for the price of a studio - they even moved us immediately so we had 3 nights in the 1 bed - great service)

Easy answer first Yes:
You have the option to buy up to 24 single use points but this can only be done at the 7 month window You can pay cash but it's generally at full rack rate so not good value- there are cheaper options Generally you get to keep the same room but it's not guaranteed- we have actually moved offsite & been placed in the exact same room as before. Yes you obviously have to speak to member services but it's also payment in full. One other option, & I alluded to it above, DVC stays are more expensive over Fri/Sat so some move out for a few nights- we have done this twice-3 nights BV Palace & 3 nights at Universal, worth mentioning that you can l;eave the majority of your luggage at Guest Services so don't need to take it with you IYKWIM Obviously SSR points will go further but I advise doing a spreadsheet & then sitting down & doing it this way: SSR - Sept 2 weeks = 166 points you have 160 so need to borrow 6 points from the next UY, effectively you can go for 26 years borrowing those 6 points until you have to miss a year & then start again! As above you need to ‘buy’ the extra points first so it’s all then booked with the extra points- only 24 though.
With DVC many people tend to find they don’t have enough points and end up buying add ons. May like me have 4+ contracts. Always buying 24 extra points is not a smart option generally as it costs more. It’s often better to have more points than you think you’ll need as a) You will probably use them and b) You can bank or rent excess.

We are thinking that over time we’ll add on smaller contracts, hopefully with the same UY 🙂

You can also buy points off another member and have them transferred into your account. That way you control the booking process and can book everything at the same time. Points transferred keep their home resort privileges etc so best buy in same resort/use year if possible.

If you have enough points for 11 nights you could borrow for 3. Approx every 4 years you could have a non Disney holiday and build your points back up and start again.
Eg. You have 150 points and your trip costs 200 Year 1: current 150 borrow 50 Year 2: current 100 borrow 100 Year 3: current 50 borrow 150 Year 4: either have a year off. Or borrow 150 and spend a few nights offsite. We occasionally travel two years in a row but never three years in a row so this works well for us. We have also had a week with free dining in a moderate followed by a week DVC. Or a few days at universal. Also bear in mind different resorts are different points. So if you are calculating on a more expensive resort you can stretch your points by a few nights at a cheaper one. Edited at 07:55 PM. |
