USB problem on a mac

Hi All, If I put one of my usb sticks into my mac I get the following error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
Anyone know a way around this?
Regards Ted
Stay safe everyone...

Try running disk utilities and select first aid. It might sort the problem out without erasing any of the data.

not strictly true. all usb sticks, memory cards and hard disks should be compatible, but depending on the format of the drive, it may not be readable/writable without additional software. the biggest culprit is windows ntfs format. the mac wont be able to read the contents without something like macos fuse or paragon installing.

if you are using a device on both windows and macos, then fat32 is best (unless you are using files over 4gb in size) or exfat. most are formatted fat32 anyway these days

Thanks- noted that op has sorted problem now.
Reason I posted was, a couple of years ago I purchased an external hard drive for my Mac. It wasn’t until I plugged it in and it didn’t work that I realised that on the box-“ PC compatible” was printed and that it would not work with a Mac. I therefore purchased another which stated that it was compatible with both PC and Mac😐

if it says that, you just need to use disk utility to reformat the drive to a mac-compatible format (AFS/HFS/exfat rather than NTFS)
