Thanks everyone for your responses. I'll mention it at the internal flight check-in just in case, so they can seat me further away if necessary - only from the allergy point of view.

I think I had imagined a Paris Hilton look-a-like with a tiny dog in a handbag!

yeah within the US on internal flights you can bring dogs/cats onboard. However, there kennel has to be able to fit under the seat of their owner. there is usually an increase in the no. of people bring cats/dogs onboard during the summer because most airlines put a pet embargo in place to stop them being put in with the luggage because of the heat (when they are waiting to be loaded on).
when i worked with an airline and we flew to india i used to get phonecalls for bringing service monkeys onboard!

There was a dog on one of our internal flights with Continental a couple of years ago. I couldn't see it properly but I think it was a puppy. My sister spent the whole flight going on about how cruel it was and wondering if the flight attendants knew about it!

When I went to Orlando last year and was on the monorail to the main terminal, there was a lady with a small dog in a mahoosive Louis Vuitton Pet Carrier ... it was odd.

Oh great I am allergic to cats as well (all animals really). Plus I'm thinking how on earth would I be able to keep DD and DS away from any animals as they love cats and dogs
