urgent replies needed

Hello everyone

I need urgent replies to this question. Now my husband works for a company and its in drainage. Now his work time is 9 until 6 monday to friday.
But, this is hard to explain, or is it. Take about 15 minutes ago, he has made my husband go back into London, and he is stuck in loads of traffic, now he could get to this job done before 6, but his boss will not pay for his travelling time from that job back to his work yard. But I have said you are in the works van, and still have to get back to work and drop the van off. Now to me, he is not going home, he is going back to the yard. Then he will come home. But his boss will not pay for him to come back from london to the yard. Surely this is not right.

Sorry if that sounds abit jumbled, what I am trying to say, he is still at gone 6 oclock in a works van, and got to get back to yard, as he cannot bring the van home, so surely he is still at work, and his boss should pay overtime. I do hate people taking the mick. My husband has had enough, if his boss is not going to pay, the surely my husband should be back in the work yard at 6 to come home.

Depends what his contract says ...
Also why he did it... for example why this late unplanned journey was needed.
Basically if you husband has been in the job for less than two years it's probably not worth him making a fuss about , but obviously your husband knows a lot more about the situation. What does he say ?

does he get paid overtime ? or just a salary

accepted travel time is usually +1 hour either side of contracted hours, are we taling more than an hours travel

if your husband is paid an hourly rate and the employer could not reasonably have expected him to be back at the yard by 6 then yes, he is owed at least the time back or payment - though possibly not at 'overtime rates'
If he could have been back easily by 6 if it weren't for the traffic then the boss could just say it was a one off and sorry, shan't say anything if you finish a bit early on Friday

As above it depends what the contract says.
My work are super flexible with me and always allow me time to leave early for things like parents evening and sports days so I don’t mind the odd day working over as they give back when I need it.

Thanks for your replies, the thing is, my husband is so good to him, and I feel he is taking advantage. He has been with this company for 10 years. Along time, and in that time, he has only had a month off in 10 years, and that was a week at a time.
Contract? yes dont think I have ever seen it. Must get husband to ask his boss. He does get overtime, but not very often.
I just feel that he should get at least something, because he is never back in the yard for 6. We are not asking for time for him to get home, only back to his work yard.

I think my husband will start looking for another job. Which is so hard, as he is 60, but loves working.

So my hubby works kind of civil engineering/contractors. He gets paid for going out to a job (including if he starts early) but not for coming home.
He does bring his van home as he is a foreman and he pays the tax on it (and the other stipulations involved in taking it home).

Today my husband is working about an hour away, he will work til 5.30 like he is supposed to and that's when he will get paid to. He wont get paid for the hours travel home.

However... if his boss asked him to head out to a job an hour away 15 minutes before he was due to finish work, and he was held up really late, then had to travel to the yard to then travel home... my husband would claim the extra time. And he would be paid for it.

I advise your hubby looks at his contract when he gets home to see if he can bring his issue up or not.

Just reading all this, the answer is to leave, but it is very scary to leave a job, when you are 60, even though he is fit.
We all worry about bills, we are use to getting paid weekly and most get paid monthly, so scary for us.

Once you get past the first month it’s much easier getting paid monthly, you shuffle all your bills so they come out the day after pay day for example, fill your car up, do a big food shop, then divide your rest by 4
