Would you tip 40% for 'elevated' service?

Friends in NYC sent me this - no way I would be tipping 40%, even if the service was 'elevated'. The lowest suggestion is now 18%.

No. Elevated service is something you expect in a high end restaurant where you’re paying ridiculous amounts for the food. They’ll get an “elevated” tip because of that. If we had a server who I thought was superb I might tip a bit more but definite not 40%!

I’ve tipped more than 40% once (in the UK), and that was because our server was doing her absolute best in the run up to Christmas with the place being way overbooked for the staff they had, to the extent they gave us a hefty discount on our bill and we all decided to give what we would’ve spent on that to her as a tip. She was so overwrought, she burst into tears on the spot, bless her 🥺

We’d go for the top end of the normal options there if the server and food were both excellent, but 30-40% feels excessive and far too pushy!

I can’t even think of what sort of service I would expect to warrant 40%!?!?
Even if you were at the most high end classy/posh restaurant - you are already paying a higher price for it so why should the tip be higher to? It’s all relative surely? If my bill is £120 my 10% tip is £12…. If my bill is £940 my 10% is £94 - why should it be a higher % for a more expensive meal? Or am I just proving that I am too common to eat anywhere other then a hungry horse 🤣

Nope. Not even if a Michelin starred chef turned up personally to cut the top off my boiled egg!

The “custom tip” button would be getting pressed every time!
