If it comes back unauthorised, don't let that put you off. Still take him, then just pay the fine when it arrives (ours took nearly 4 months!). Would be nicer if it is authorised, but don't worry if it's not

I personally don't think the Y7 exams are that important. It's really a 'see what level they're working at' thing and see fit hey need to be moved up or down a set - but a good school should know this by the class work and have flexible sets anyway. I'd definitely take him out if it were me. And if they're lucky the fine would only be £120 so well worth it imo

Forgot to add - I totally agree with loves2plan above! Unauthorised doesn't mean you can't go, just that there'll prob be a fine if you do.

I'd remind them that the school aren't actually saying no, they are just saying they won't authorise it - big difference! The only downside to taking children out of secondary that I found is that if they go below a certain attendance percentage then it triggers a lot of hassle - school meetings, attendance officer phone calls, needing doctor's letters for any slight illness etc. I wasn't worried about the education side of a fortnight off school whatseoever but if I'd known the hassle it would be I may have reconsidered doing it.

Great news. I hope he enjoys his holiday and his mum's health improves soon.

I saw your post on Forum Spy and had to see what the school said yes to - how fantastic for your nephew! And how lovely of you to do this for him (though I imagine he'll add quite some magic to your trip, too).

Have a great trip - and fun planning/looking forward to it.
