Car crime in San Francisco
I have been on another forum, and seen a huge amount of talk on car crime in SF. It appears to be a huge problem, with out of state and rental cars being a favourite target.
I’m now starting to worry. I know all the sensible precautions to take about not leaving stuff in the car, but what if I end up with a smashed window anyway? Is there an excess to pay usually? I’m seriously considering returning the car early and walking/ ubering now. What does everyone else think? |

I would return the car in SF, there isn't much need for one there, we used BART train into the city from the airport and then a MUNI pass to get around, it worked very well for us although Uber and Lyft seem to be good value there too. Parking at our hotel was $50 a night plus tax/tip etc. and street parking was mostly metered at $2 an hour and more.
Trip advisor does seem to be making a big deal on car crime, so i guess if you need to keep it just make sure you take everything out of it at night. Edited at 04:43 PM. |

Totally agree... if ever a city is made for not using a car then it's SF... the parking charges are normally off the scale as well...

There is no need for a car in SF. Overnight parking charges can be horrendous - as much as $55 at some hotels. Ditch any hire car whilst in the city. pick up one as you are leaving if continuing into California. there are pick points in the city but a better choice at the airport.

Got to agree. Ditch the car. So easy to get around without one.

We stayed in the Cow Hollow Motor Inn mid-trip and kept our car the whole time. We booked a BA fly drive package at a good price before we knew our itinerary. The parking was free. You could just walk in to the car park from the street so that is something to bear in mind, but we didn't experience any issues with the car's security. The only time I took it out during our stay was to go to the Avis office re a warning light issue.

Thank you everyone. I will return the car as it looks like it will just stay in the car park for 3 days anyway. Uber to the airport seems cheap so we will probably end up saving money by knocking off 3 days rental

We only used our car to get to the Zoo, on the way back we stopped off a the Golden Gate Bridge for some photos too.
Other than that, we walked and got Ubers to and from Fisherman's Wharf, and got the cable car to Union Square

It sounds like that is your last stop so I'd definately drop the car off, you'll have more choice for hotels plus Uber is really good there. Although we had a car as we were staying mid trip once we arrived we didn't use it until we left again. Parking in SF is horrendous. We used Uber which was good and cheap.
