You can explore the public areas of all WDW hotels as much as you like. The only thing non-residents can't do is use the pools. Even difficult now to just sit around the pools as more and more have gates.

Yes you can always look around a resort and get a drink have meal we stay on-site but we alway have resort hopping day like use the monorail and go to all 3 MK resorts, nice to look in the lobby's really like AKL and WL. Just walk thought via BC to the bus stop.
