Wanting to get a VPN

Our DGS plays on his xbox permanently and has come across at least one person who keeps “blocking” our internet with something called Octosniff I am told. The internet stays on as the blue light remains on the router. However, for about five minutes no-one in the house can connect. This highly annoying.

Plusnet have changed our IP address but this person has found us again in double quick time. Yesterday, it happened three times and today it has happened two times so far.

I rang Plusnet again and did not have any confidence in the person I spoke to in their IT department whereas the first time of phoning I was more than happy with advice I received. I will keep on trying though.

However, today I was advised by Plusnet to get a VPN. I can honestly say that, although I have an idea of what this is, I am utterly clueless on anything else. So please could someone help me, please, please, please. How do I do this?

Octosniff allows for a user to find the IP address and username of a gamer.

That is fine, with that information they cannot block your connection to the internet unless they have a huge amount of bandwidth and do a DDOS (denial of service attack) which is highly unlikely.

Sounds more like the bug which is in the BT routers that Plusnet use which drops the outbound connection. Had it myself and no longer use their router as a WiFi hub, just a modem and have my own network behind it as I use some advanced features they don't support.

Next time it happens, just reboot the router.and see if it works straight away again.

Plusnet said it was probably a DDOS attack. As for a bug, may be but this has only happened in the last week and we have had this router for about three years.

I pressed reset on the router but nothing changed.

I have tried to get a VPN but the instructions may as well have been written in Chinese for all I understood!
