just so i can connect it to the TV to watch netFlix in the evenings if we all wanna kick back and watch a movie but also play all our photos and videos back from the day instead of passing my iPhone round all the time.

Not really that cheap, $99 normally in the apple store. I'm sure if you hunt hard enough you might get it as low as that

It is his birthday while we are out there and he just wants $$$$$ so he is looking for things to spend his money on so I think we will just wait until we are out there.

depending on what your DS wants it for, he may be better off with the amazon fire tv which launched last week and costs the same as the appletv. you can pick them up at best buy over there as well as online.

whilst i use my appletv2 every day, the atv3 is quite limited in what you can do with it unless all your media is stored in itunes (mine isnt) - i'll definitely be getting a firetv when i go in a few months time, although by then the appletv4 will probably be out, and ill change my mind again
