He has all his media on itunes so that is why he is looking at apple tv. Have been looking at the chromecast for DD as she is on Android with Samsung devices.

Why do you need a 3 pin plug? I have an Apple TV and it connects to my tv via the cable supplied and fits directly into my hdmi slot on my tv!

the chromecast is good but *very* limited in what it can do. the fire tv is a much more fully featured device so may be more suitable for your DD

Picked up a Chromecast last night for the villa, $35.00.
You can plug it into the mains or power it from the usb connection on the tv.
Had a little play this morning and was able to watch movies, video, pics, youtube etc.
Very simple for anyone to utilize when they get here regardless of type and make of the device they will be streaming from.
May just need to install an app on the device to stream
